CCRP - SPIRIT ProgramsThese programs address the "wellness" of the cancer patient by providing services and activities that challenge and improve the physical and emotional health in an environment that addresses and supports the unique needs of each cancer survivor.  In addition, this program will utilize instructors and facilitators that have special training regarding the needs of cancer patients.

Each program carefully and collaboratively considers the needs and resources of each community involved in promoting wellness for their local cancer survivors.  Funds are raised locally to support each program component and are implemented by providers sensitive to and familiar with the unique needs of cancer patients

The Goals are:

  1. To provide a supportive and encouraging environment for cancer patients

  2. To provide physical activities that encourage wellness and improve physical stamina

  3. To provide a social network for both formal and informal wellness activities

As medical treatments become more effective, cancer is increasingly becoming a chronic rather than a terminal illness.  For this reason, patient response and self-efficacy have become more important in effecting patients' stress and adjustment to their disease.  The need for cancer patients to influence and potentially "control" their survival is becoming more and more critical.

It is well documented that participating in aerobic exercise decreases the symptoms of patients undergoing chemotherapy and decreases the level of fatigue universally experienced by cancer patients.  In addition, research studies suggest that participation in "support" programs (groups and activities) improves the potential life expectancy of cancer patients
