Description of
local program
In the Eastern Oregon
community of Pendleton, the
SPIRIT Program offers free
exercise, yoga and massage to any
cancer survivor who wishes to
participate. Over the past 4 years
The Cancer Community Renewal Project
has provided these free healing and
wellness services to over 125 local
cancer survivors.
Providers for this
program are chosen based on their
training and experience with the
unique needs of cancer survivors,
both physically and emotionally.
They
offer compassionate support to each
participant’s healing journey.
The Pendleton SPIRIT
Program is supported through funds
raised locally each year. Through
the Fall Fashions for Survivors
Style Show held in the Fall, in
addition to other local fundraising
events, the community of Pendleton
supports these programs.
The
Cancer Community Renewal Project is
proud to collaborate with
St.
Anthony Hospital
which provides a generous grant to support athletic
club memberships at the Round Up
Athletic Club for local cancer
survivors. These memberships in
addition to Cancer Exercise
Specialists - who develop individual
training and exercise programs- help
eliminate the barriers which make it
difficult for cancer patients as
they try to heal during and after
their medical treatments.
Programs and
Services
|
Massage |
Massage
offers a reconnection of
mind, body and spirit to the
cancer patient. It
provides relief from anxiety
and tension, pain relief,
and personal caring touch.
Most of all it offers the
cancer patient what they
really need: a reaffirmation
of their significance as a
human being. |
|
Yoga |
Benefits to
the cancer patient include
enhanced flexibility,
Improved Circulation,
Increased concentration.
Most Yoga programs include
relaxation techniques which
consistently help the cancer
patient control physical
symptoms, emotional stress
and help them progress
through their chronic
illness. |
|
Exercise Classes |
The benefits
of regular exercise are
clear and well documented.
These benefits are vital to
the "well-being" of the
cancer patient.
Activities such as mild
aerobic and weight training
programs (cycling, walking,
x-country skiing, etc) will
provide the cancer patient
with regular and supervised
physical activities that
will promote improvement in
stamina, tone and
flexibility, stress
reduction, and
cardiovascular health.
